'SoFaD' and its predecessor 'Violator' are for me the two most essential Depeche Mode albums so I'd say it's advisable to start with those although they're surrounded by other very good ones - it should be said, though, that 'SoFaD' is kind of the black sheep of the family, as discussed in the very good review above, since its use of 'rock.

SOFAD is my top 5 fav Depeche Mode albums. That album got me through many hard times in my life. Even tho the band especially Dave were at their lowest and awful point in their lives especially if you watch the documentary of making that album. All of those hardships ended up creating a masterpiece. SOFAD remains close to my heart.
